Left off the main stage at the Garde Arts Center for Tuesday night's 2nd Congressional District debate, third party candidates William Clyde and Dan Reale used a brief outdoor exchange to separate themselves from their mainstream competitors.

"What I bring to this is a fresh perspective. What I bring to this is using data and not lining up with a party," said Clyde, a Madison resident who entered the race unaffiliated but clinched the Green Party endorsement in July. "I want to solve problems using common sense."

As hundreds of supporters for incumbent Democratic U.S. Rep. Joe Courtney and his GOP challenger, Lori Hopkins-Cavanagh, lined Broad and State streets with campaign signs, bullhorns and other materials, Clyde and Reale shouted to be heard in front of a law office next to the Garde but drew backing of their own.

The hour-long debate was moderated by Barabra Brockhurst, a member of the League of Women Voters.

"One of my focuses is for too long, one party pretending to be two has allowed banks to fabricate documents and steal homes," Reale said.
